ABSTRACT: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is one of method for welding process which used for the extensions of heavy construction, for bridge construction. The SMAW process is the most widely used welding process. It is simplest, have high reliability and the equipments is relative small. Microstructure and mechanic properties of weld metal were influenced by many factors such as chemical composition, heat input, filler, covered electrodes, etc. Heat input was influenced by voltage, current, and welding speed. This research studies the mechanical properties of carbon steel AISI 1020 that influence of current. Welding Process was carried out using SMAW with the filler type used was AWS E 7016, and the currents were varied at 175 A, and 320 A. The dimension specimens for tensile tests were prepared in accordance with the ASTM E-8. The Results of this research shows that the highest mechanical properties were achieved at weld metal with current 175 A where tensile strength is 44.5 kg/mm2, the ductility is 40.2%, and the hardness are 188 HV (weld metal) and 183.8 HV ( HAZ). From micro photographs shows that an increase on current leads to coarsening the microstructure on the weld metal and a maximum percentage of bainite
