ABSTRAC: The industrial process usually uses the shell and tube heat exchanger to processing their products. Until now, the characteristic data of the shell and tube heat exchanger is limited. The aim of this experiment is designing and building the shell and tube heat exchanger, then finds their characteristic. The experiment had done with the three variable of flow. The result of the experiment showed that the effective of the system is 28 %; this number is less than the effective number from that had designed that is 35 %. The other result also showed that the over all coefficient of heat transfer (U) is influenced by the quantity of flow and the number of NTU, also the number of effective of heat transfer is influenced by type of fluid (laminar or turbulent).
