ABSTRACT: American Concrete Institute Committee 440 F is developing a document (ACI 440 F-99,1999) that addresses design recommendations and construction techniques for use of FRP as concrete reinforcempent. The committee report will summarize the existing state-of-the-art of industry and fundamental design consept. Design with FRP reinforcement, as discussed by ACI 440 F, follows the same basic principles of equilibrium and constitutive behavior as used for conventionally reiforced concrete.
Several design/philosophy issues that FRP-strengthening designers must consider are : Minimum required pre-strengthened strength (strength of the unstrengthened element) criterion to prevent collaps if the FRP is compromised due uncontrolable events (fire, vandalism, impact, etc), Limit on strength enhancement to maintain “ductile” behavior, Appropriate factors (reliability factors) and limits on design strength, and Condition of concrete substrate
Keywords : design, flexure strength-reduction, carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP)
