Abstract

This research efforts to study polymerization and characterization of polyacrylamide that prepared by free-radical polymerization in an aqueous solution using redox initiation system. The acrylamide solution was inserted into the flask, then shake and boil to get polymerization temperature. When the temperature was reached, redox initiator was introduced quickly into the reaction medium. Aliquots were taken regularly and its polymer content was determined gravimetrically. Variables investigated were temperature (30-35 0C), monomer concentration (3.52.10-4-1.41.10-3 mole/mL) and initiator concentration (2.8.10-5-5.5.10-5 mole/mL). The number-average molecular weights were obtained from intrinsic viscosity. To test the solubility of polymer in various solvent, a known weight of the polymer was put into the respective solvent and kept in contact for 3 hours with occasional shaking. Then the undissolved polymer was separated, washed and dried in a vacuum.The overall rate constant of free-radical polymerization of acrylamide in an aqueous solution using redox initiation system is
K= 3.2 x 1023 e –39840/RT ,
in range temperature of 30-50 oC
