ABSTRACT: In accordance with government policy of society housing, the requirement of housing is also increasing along with population growth. This problem has an impact to the requirement of structural material especially concrete brick as wall construction material. One of concrete brick composition materials are cement and sand which is expensive and beginning to rare to obtain. Beside, natural sand availability is reduced along with time. To solve this problem, fly ash become more important material as supplement for mortar for its pozzolan characteristic. But, the effect of fly ash using to the environment is still in questioning. A lot of research of fly ash is based on its strength.
The purpose of this study are to know the quality of concrete brick using fly ash material supplement, the safety level toward the environment and human health by concentrating to the probability of hazardous material leaching, and the economical factor for concrete brick and fly ash production to SNI standard concrete brick based on its cost. The method that applied is by making 80 concrete samples with 5 variations that combine of 4 variations concrete sample and 1 variation standard concrete brick as comparison. The concrete brick composition are: Variation I = 0,6ps (sand) : 0,1kr (aggregate) : 0,1kp (lime) : 0,2fa (fly ash) ; Variation II = 0,5ps : 0,1kr : 0,1kp : 0,3fa ; Variation III = 0,4ps : 0,1kr : 0,1kp : 0,4fa ; Variation IV = 0,3ps : 0,1kr : 0,1kp : 0,5fa ; Variation V is normal batako based on SNI standard. Curing process will be varied by 2 ways: (1) submerged in water for 6 hours/day and 12 hours/day, and (2) pouring by water with pouring period are 1 time/day, 2 times/day, and 3 times/day. Batako quality testing will be conducted toward compressive strength, permeability and volume weight parameters. While Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test will be conducted for environment safety and human health.
The analysis result showed the best quality composition of concrete brick with fly ash is Variation III using 40% fly ash composition with compressive strength test is 99 kg/cm2 and porosity of 0,02, permeability of 0,0000049 cm/sec and volume weight is 2102 kg/cm3 while curing process with three times water pouring gives better performance for its compressible strength for curing process. For environment effect, TCLP test showed that leaching degree for heavy metal composition (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr and As) is under standard limit. The cost for concrete brick using fly ash is also has economical advantage. It can be concluded that the use of appropriate fly ash as concrete brick gives better performance in cost and environment aspect.
