ABSTRACT: High concentration of iron in water can cause aesthetic problems and unpleasant taste if the water is drunk. One of the methods used to remove iron is aeration. The objectives of this research is to study efficiency of reducing iron in water with tray aerator modification and sedimentation. The water used in this research is ground water wich contains 0.8 mg/l; 3 mg/l; and 5 mg/l Fe3+. The variables used in this research including flow rate of ground water, namely 0.18 l/s; 0.27 l/s and 0,36 l/s; detention time in aerator (0.3 seconds; 0.5 seconds; 0.7 seconds) and pH (pH 6.40, pH 7.40, pH 8.00). The measured quality parameters were temperature, pH, DO, organic compound and Fe2+. The result of this research shows that the lime adding to pH 8 can improved the decreasing of iron element percentage in the groundwater. Iron concentration in the sedimentation effluent that still higher than drink-water quality standard, except in the concentration of iron element 0,8 mg/l.
