ABSTRACT

Steel S45C is a medium carbon steel which contains carbon a bout 0,45%, widely used to make tools and engine parts. Because of the insufficiencies of the steel especial of its corrosion resistance, it is necessarily to make a research to increase the corrosion resistance so this can substitute other more expensive materials. This research aims to know the effect of NH3 concentration in HSB solution (HCL,NH2,H2SO4) used as media for corrosion process of steel plate S45C with flame hardening of 950°C.
Flame hardening is conducted by the flame of acetylene welding when the light of the flame is yellow. After flame hardening, the steel plate is dyed in water media. Corrosion rate is done with losing weight method in HSB media, with various NH3 solutions of 1 %, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%, each of the solution is mixed with HCL of 2,5% and H2SO4 of 1%. The testing done is testing in stretch, toughness, micro structure and corrosion.
The result of the research shows that stretch strength of the steel plate increases after flame hardening process, the increase is 134,30kg/mm2. The rate of the surface toughness increases, it is maximally 505,9 km/mm2. After flame hardening process the martensit phase (part) in micro structure is dominant enough compared to farit and perlit phase (part), the shape and the size of the martensit part is large enough and regular, so the rate of the corrosion in the steel plate without flame hardening process is higher compared to the one with flame hardening process. The highest corrosion rate occurring of steel plate without flame hardening is 21,5878 mm/year in the NH3 solution of 5% whereas the lowest corrosion rate of steel plate with flame hardening process in NH3 solution of 1 % is 10,5116 mm/year. The decrease is 10,08 %, if it is compared to the steel plate without flame hardening process. But it is categorized as not recommended corrosion resistance. Based on the result of the research, the property of steel S45C may be increased by flame hardening process so this steel can be widely applied.
