ENGINEERING JOURNAL : PENGARUH KOMPOSISI MORTAR TERHADAP KUAT GESER DAN HANCUR TEKAN SEARAH BIDANG PADA DINDING PASANGAN BATA MERAH

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to obtain compressive and shear strength of masonry red brick clay with variety of mortar composition that generally used in practice. Independent variable in this research is mortar composition in volume proportion; those are 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8. This proportion is for Portland cement to sand or fine aggregate and adding water is used until workability of mortar is adequate. Dependent variable that is used is compressive strength and shear strength in plane of masonry brick. The experiments were to be done on red masonry brick models for compression test and shear test in plane. For compression test 5 brick masonry were formed vertical and 2-cm mortar was used to bend the brick. Shear test was done on masonry model 50-cm long and 50-cm height, with 2-cm spacing for horizontal and vertical. Load applied on top surface model until failure. Applying load on diagonal until failure was done for shear test. The result shown the strength of mortar decreases as increasing the amount of fine aggregate of mortar composition. Composition of mortar significantly affects the compression strength of brick masonry, but depend on maximum strength of brick itself. The shear strength of brick masonry significantly wasn't affected by composition of mortar, although shear strength changed very small.
